Redact a PDF: remove sensitive data for good
Drawing a black box in a normal editor only covers text: anyone can still copy it from underneath. Here, every page with a redaction is re-rendered as an image with the boxes burnt in, so the hidden text is really gone from the file.
Find text to redact by typing it, by ready patterns (e-mail addresses, phone numbers, bank account numbers and IBANs, Polish NIP and PESEL numbers), or by drawing boxes by hand. Comments and form field values that contain the searched text are removed from the other pages too.
How to use it
- Drop a PDF.
- Search for text, tick patterns, or drag boxes over the areas to hide; check the preview.
- Click "Redact and save" and download the redacted PDF.
Questions
Can the redacted text be recovered?
No. Pages with redactions are rebuilt from an image with the boxes burnt in; the original text, comments and form fields on those pages are not in the output.
What happens to pages without redactions?
They stay as they are, with selectable text, except that comments and form values matching your search or patterns are removed.
Can I still search the redacted pages?
Not directly, because they are now images. Run the result through OCR if you need the remaining text to be searchable.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Redact PDF runs in your browser on your own device, so your files never leave it. It is free, with no account, no limits and no watermark, and the code is open source (AGPL-3.0).
