Password-protect a PDF

Encrypt a PDF with AES-256 so that only people who know the password can open it. Useful before sending payslips, medical results or contracts by e-mail.

You can also allow or block printing, copying text and images, and editing. Adobe Reader, browsers and most viewers honour these permissions, though some tools ignore them. An optional owner password lets you change the permissions later.

How to use it

  1. Drop a PDF.
  2. Enter the password twice and choose the permissions.
  3. Click "Protect PDF" and download the encrypted file.

Questions

How strong is the protection?

The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest method the PDF format offers. A long, unique password matters most.

What if I forget the password?

It cannot be recovered, by us or anyone else. Keep it somewhere safe.

Is the password sent anywhere?

No. Encryption happens in your browser; the password and the file stay on your device.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Protect PDF runs in your browser on your own device, so your files never leave it. It is free, with no account, no limits and no watermark, and the code is open source (AGPL-3.0).
