OCR: make a scanned PDF searchable
A scan is just a picture of text: you cannot search it, select it or copy from it. OCR (optical character recognition) reads the words on each page and adds them as an invisible text layer over the unchanged image, so the PDF looks exactly the same but Ctrl+F, copy and paste work.
It recognises Polish and English with Tesseract, running entirely on your device. Choose Fast, Accurate (300 dpi, about 10 seconds per page) or Small print. Pages that already contain text can be skipped, and photos of documents become one PDF.
How to use it
- Drop a scanned PDF, or several photos of pages (they become one PDF in the order shown).
- Choose the language and quality.
- Click "Recognise text" and download the searchable PDF, or copy the recognised text.
Questions
Which languages are supported?
Polish and English, separately or together.
Does OCR change how the PDF looks?
No. The page images stay untouched; the text is added as an invisible layer on top.
How long does it take?
About 10 seconds per page at the Accurate setting, depending on your computer. The first run in the browser also loads the language data from this site.
Are my files uploaded?
No. OCR PDF runs in your browser on your own device, so your files never leave it. It is free, with no account, no limits and no watermark, and the code is open source (AGPL-3.0).
